Whenever

When did so many people begin using the term 'whenever' when the word 'when' seems appropriate? For example, the sentence: "The learner acquires content and develops thinking processes whenever he or she decides that content or process is needed." I feel the sentence should be written, 'when he or she decides'. Does anyone agree?

    When = at such time
    Whenever = at any time

    Subtle difference, but a difference nonetheless, and your sample sentence seems correct to me as it implies this decision may happen more than once.

      Man, I am soooo glad you answered my post. Your answer makes total sense! Now I can refrain from getting so upset every time I hear 'whenever'. I'll have to practice the difference in my mind so I can catch the proper use, and misuse!

      Thanks
